First find out how the wall is built
The right wall insulation method depends on construction. Some homes have a cavity between the outer and inner wall; others have solid walls or a lining that may need to be altered. The age of a home can offer clues, but it does not replace an inspection.
Existing damp, cracks or water entry should be addressed before adding insulation. Filling a wall without understanding its condition can make a problem harder to find later.
Common retrofit approaches
Cavity wall insulation may be possible where the cavity is suitable and can be accessed. Internal insulation is another option, often using an insulated lining, though it can change room dimensions and mean adjustments to switches, trim or fittings.
External systems may suit some buildings, but they involve changes to the outside finish and need to be planned around the facade and relevant approvals. Ask an installer to explain the disruption and finish for each option.
Questions worth asking
Ask how the wall type will be confirmed, how moisture will be managed and what the work means for the existing finish. A good assessment should make the trade-offs clear rather than promising one method suits every home.
